Amazing Grace

I went to see the new Amazing Grace movie yesterday, which opened on Feb 23, two hundred years to the day since William Wilberforce's bill to abolish the slave trade in Britain was passed in Parliament. I'm not a huge period film kinda guy but it was definitely worth the time and the $8.25 to go see. The film tells the story of Wilberforce's struggles to stand up for compassion and humanity in a time of desperate need. As a young politician, he decided to take on the injustice of the slave trade. Abolition had few supporters and the opposition was great. This is when his friend William Pitt reassures him, "We are too young to understand what is impossible, and too foolish not to do it." We find ourselves in a similar world that tolerates unspeakable injustices, while so many Christians are content to be ignorant and sit in their suburban churches leaving justice to the politicians. May I never sit idly by and watch the rich oppress the poor for their own gain. May my faith move me to act on their behalf, or why else am I still here. Wilberforce was a great man not because he was a great orator, or a great politician, but because he had great compassion. That's a challenge worth considering for us all.

I was so moved by the way Wilberforce's passion was depicted in the movie. I am challenged to become more focused in regards to my passions... instead of just being empathetic... I pray that I am able to express my passions authentically instead of surpressing them...

And I continually need to remember John Newton's quote: "Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly. I'm a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior."

ha, ha, ha, veerrrryyy funny :-P you're such a goon! I appreciate you thinking of me and even adding a nice little link of one of my greatest fears, how sweet of you ;-)

kidding, jimmy told me yesterday that you guys were going to watch it and I told him that you guys were crazy. When i come home we are going to have to occasionally switch to "amanda friendly" movies. I mean, saw? jaws? next it's going to be a shark that can walk and carries a chain saw.. okay i just freaked myself out enough of that :-)

Sounds like I missed out on a pretty good movie (the amazing grace one) I will have to see that eventually. I hope you have had a great weekend so far and that you enjoy this beautiful sunday. I clicked on the link to the abolsihing slavery sight and saw a pic of that kid you introduced me to at soul fest? (i think anyways) and that is so cool that he got so many signatures on his petition, how cool is that. That kid is living big for God, and it's so cool to see. Well anyways, i'd add a link of something you're scared of, but since i have yet to learn anything, oh well... hehe, ttys :-)
